A night of forward thinking music who have previously booked artists such as Riva Starr, Rusko, Drop the Lime, Roska, Jack Beats & Tomb Crew. The list is huge and stretches wide across the electronic music spectrum.

Tonight they kick things off with the man in form atm James Blake. This guys stock is constantly on the rise and his latest offering Limit to your love is Zane Lowe's single of the week.

DJ Fresh. DnB Pioneer. New album Kryptonite came out a few weeks ago and I managed to get my hands on a copy.

Not gonna lie, it's got some pretty poppy songs - vocal led Golddust and and Lassitude will be popular with radio play but are not his best work. Heavyweight is on there (does what it says on the tin) and a couple of solid dubstep tracks. The bassline on Fight is rude. Talkbox is also a banging intro track. The whole thing is definitely worth a look.

However... the best thing about the release from me was the free track Fresh gave out via Drum and Bass Arena to promote it - Factory. A slice of energetic and refreshing dnb.

Creamfields vs SW4

This bank holiday weekend is not only host to the Notting Hill Carnival but two huge dance events are going head to head. Being a neutral and not going to either I'm going to compare them the True Mess Head way and see who comes out on top.

Creamfields

Set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside an hour away from Liverpool and Manchester it is one of the few full on dance festivals this country has to offer in summertime. It has a great reputation and has international branches all across the world. It has the pulling power to attract the top names in electronic music to showcase their talents to 60,000 + revellers.

The line up is superb. Artists representing all corners of dance music are here. The likes of Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, David Guetta, Plastikman, Swedish House Mafia, Eric Prydz, Sven Vath, Major Lazer, Annie Mac, Andy C, Tiga, Tom Middleton, Riva Starr, Evil Nine and many more. The full line up can be found here.

The price of a ticket is a bargain at £100 so no wonder it sold out a couple of weeks ago. The logistics of the festival are my only problem. Camping only opens on Saturday and you have to be out by early Monday morning. The music also stops at 11pm on the Sunday night. I suppose by that time one would be worn out from so much music.

SW4

Since becoming a more electronic orientated festival in 2009, South West Four has established itself as a worthy rival to Creamfields. Being held within London at Clapham Common, means no camping but it does allow for after-parties all across London to occur.

The line is really good, not as many artists as Creamfields but those that are playing are the best of the business. Armin Van Buuren, Erick Morillo, Sasha, Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Mark Knight, Fatboy Slim, Carly Cox, Boys Noize, Skream & Benga and many more.

The price of each day is £45 but again is sold out. Time restrictions mean that it does have to finish at 10pm but that's why there are official and unofficial afterparties all across London town. Ministry of Sound is hosting the official after party with the likes of Pete Tong and Layo & Bushwacka across the two nights.

I believe that Creamfields triumphs over SW4 as it is a big stand alone dance festival. Being in that field surrounded by all that good music just raises the atmosphere to another level. SW4 is good but there is so many different events occurring in London that weekend the shine of it is taken away a bit. Still both would be amazing.

Mega Mega Mega

As of Monday 23rd August, The Count & Sinden's long anticipated debut album hit the stores. Ever since their huge club hit Beeper rocked the dancefloor's I especially have been waiting for further collaborations between the two. Mega Mega Mega flows in a crazy pattern through the album moving from one style quickly to another. What it does keep solid throughout is its disco vibe and insatiable beats that cant stop you from tapping your foot along. There are the already released tracks in there such as Elephant 1234 and Mega but its songs such as After Dark (feat.Mystery Jets) & Addicted to You (feat Bashy) which really stand out for me. They show the range of talent that these two great producers have at their disposal.

This album could be the staple for where the Uk's main music trends are at now. The Count & Sinden are making their way to the top.

Wow. Its been so long since I have blogged anything. I feel so out the loop. There's one principal reason and that SKY not giving me internet in my new house. All is good now and I have too much to blog at my fingers.

First up its Notting Hill Carnival this weekend. The streets of Notting Hill are taken over with carnival fever for a great party atmosphere run on rice and peas!

If your down there for either Sunday or Monday there's loads going on with soundystems pumping out delicious reggae and dub beats. There's loads of parties and nights happening as well. Here are some of the highlights:

Monday: Red Bull Music Academy Presents: Major Lazer Soundsystem #3

Saving the best till last, Red Bull return to host the best party at Notting Hill Carnival. Major Lazer made their England debut at it last year and rocked the skate park turned outdoor club to its core.

This year there back with a host of hot talent in the likes of RODIGAN, Joker, Drop The Lime & more. There's more artists in the crowd and backstage than there are performing.

Tickets flew out in a first come first served manner a while back in under a minute. True Mess Head luckily snared themselves some so will be repping from down the front.

I have chosen a tune from the Jack Cates EP by JSL (BOKA025) to feature on here as I realised that there isn't much dubstep grime filth on the blog. You can buy the full release here.

The other day I decided that I needed some more vinyls and thought what better way to add to my collection than a cheesy classic!

I bought the release RELENT027T, released on 26 Nov 2001 which features;

Global Gathering!

For most of you that don't know Global Gathering is one of the biggest dance music festivals in the UK along with the likes of Creamfields.

Just check this line up out!!

I'm lucky enough to be able to go to Global this year, not only that but going as a VIP! Not to mention I'm gonna be in a chalet/hut type thing with the mrs which has 2 beds in it! Now if that's not how to spend your time at global gathering I don't know what is?!

As you can see from the line up there are A LOT of promising acts! If you go on the website you can see who's on each of the 8 main stages on each of the days. It's gonna be one heck of a 2 days.

People I'm looking forward to seeing the most are:

- Faithless, as I've never seen them before.

- Fedde le Grand, just because he is who he is!

- Booka Shade (Live), will need a deep house fix.

- Friction, because he's a BADMAN on the decks.

- Above & Beyond, because they're just legendary.

- Others include; Spor, Emalkay, Hixxy, Eric Prydz, Kissy Sell Out and possibly Lisa Lashes.

It has been a while since I posted anything which I'm sorry for, will hopefully be posting more stuff on here soon and will deffo let you know about how the festival is!

Shad. Canadian rapper (read 'social poet') extraodinaire. No.3 on my favourite hip hop artists list. His third album TSOL (true sounds of liberty) just dropped.

... it's insane. Debut single from it 'Yaa I Get It' is no questions my track of the year so far. The production has been handled by various studioheads but is far more polished than his debut full-length When This Is Over, definitely stepping in the right direction. On that disc, he showed massive promise but suffered overall from slightly lacklustre production ('Question Marks / 'Wild').

For most university students, right about now is exam time. Two to three weeks of stress, anxiety and tension as exams roll in and students realise how little work they have done! Normally I like to work in silence with no distractions in the background, yet recently I have found a little gem in the form of Damien Marley. Already big on the reggae scene, (as a multi award winning grammy star) my knowledge of one of the Marley sons was previously limited. What caught my attention was his upcoming collaboration album with Nas, 'Distant Relatives'. The hype in America for this record is huge and it lives up to its expectations. Two of the biggest stars in their respected fields coming together should be nothing short of great. The album flows beautifully with tracks 'As I Enter' and 'Nah Mean' standing out alongside my personal favourite 'Africa Must Wake Up'. Buy it now from Amazon.

Midweek Tunes Vol. 1

So it's been a while since I've posted anything on here; figured I'd pull my weight instead of just lifting them all the time :P.

March is a massive month for releases and what-not; too many for me to even remember. We all saw the drop of Camo & Krooked's above and beyond (released on Mainframe Recordings) which was pretty decent, but as I've found out quite a lot most full album releases they only have a few good quality tunes on them; i.e sub focus, half the tunes were a let down in my opinion. Personally I think Walk on Air, Tonight and Only Me are the best tracks on the new album.

Then on Saturday Jongles and myself are heading upto Plymouth in order to see Cyantific (who is going to have a 3 deck setup!) and Sigma. It's in a small(ish) club with a 12k soundsystem. Lots to look forward to so no doubt I'll be taking my ear plugs for this weekend away.

Long time love affair (for me, anyway) Felix Cartal released his debut album this week, provocatively named 'Popular Music'. Firstly, go buy it. Second, here's a rework of The Grinch by Botvox. Techy, grimey, even a little bit progressive! Botvox keep Cartal's signature synth grinds though. Recommended.

Last up I wanna hype this track. DMC wizard Craze (yeah, THE Craze) is clearly a talented man. Lets talk 2010 Drum and Bass

The 'noughties' (yeah, it's an awful name but nothing else really works....) saw the revival of drum and bass. Jungle was losing it's momentum at the end of the 20th century, vinyl sales were gradually dropping and rude boys everywhere were looking for something else to blast out of their tanked up fiestas.

But what a come back! Jungle may have been a dying idea but the niche genres it split in to as drum and bass have clearly kept it afloat. Jump up, liquid, neurofunk, darkstep, and deep/atmospheric (to name a few) all have loyal followers in terms of record labels, producers and fans.

Anyway, a new decade and a new year is upon us, so here are a cupla heads up shouts on what's lookin to be big this year.

The Brookes Brothers
They've already made their mark with arguably the biggest anthem of 2008; Tear You Down. Added to that a huge collab with Danny Byrd (Gold Rush), remixing the remix of the Chemical Brothers classic Star Guitar (reworked by Japanese electro-god Shinichi Osawa) and the mighty Dawn Treader ft Futurebound, Dan and Phil Brookes are firmly established players.

2010 Prediction: Crossover kings. Their forthcoming album will be released on BBK, who pushed the now (in)famous Pendulum to huge commercial success. Paperchase, the follow up collaboration with Danny Byrd has been repeatedly hailed in top 10 lists for months, and Fresh has been dropping hints in interviews about the impact he expects the record to make. As drum and bass is gaining more and more attention from clubbers, radio (Radio 1 has been pushing the sound massively, even in daytime playlisting - Chase & Status's Pieces was virtually on repeat in November) and the press, an easily accessible 'jump up' album should get the attention it expects to.

DJ Fresh
Following on with the BBK camp, Fresh's album apparently titled 'Kryptonite' is set to blow up alongside the Brookes. If we can take the samplers of the anthemic Hypercaine (which even got a video - surprising for a drum and bass release) and sub bass ridden Heavyweight, Fresh has grown up his sound since Escape from Planet Monday.
2010 Prediction: All killer, no filler. A more than solid drum and bass album with something for everything.

Camo and Krooked
Already favourites at True Mess Head, these boys are straight 0utta Austria. Grooverider, Zane Lowe and London Elektricity are all huge fans, and believe me, you should be too. Vampires VIP was featured on the Drum and Bass Arena Anthems 2009 compilation (well worth a look) and I defy you to not like it. It's seriously that good. Their strength is in their compatibility though - they have jump up tracks, rinseout tracks, liquidy anthems and still find time to work with labels like Viper, Renegade Hardware and Sudden Def. If you were at Hospitality at Matter a few weeks ago, you'll have heard their stuff; Skyline was euphoric. Buy their Edge of Mind EP.

2010 Prediction: Breakthrough. Although they're still not a household name, by the end of the year I'll guarantee they will be.

Sick Music 2
Hospital Records are currently riding high as a drum and bass flagship. Winning both Best Promoter and Best Club night for Hospitality, they have the artist roster and the know-how to put on the best nights in the country. Hospital Podcast is over 100 episodes old and is an essential look into the hottest dub plates incoming. And following the ridiculous success of Sick Music, the follow up seems inevitable. Apparently a Camo and Krooked track is already signed to it.

2010 Prediction: Compilation of the year. I can't see anything else coming close.

Eastern Bloc Drum and Bass
Whilst drum and bass has been a predominantly UK scene - nearly every major producer / DJ / MC / label operates from England, europe has been catching up. More importantly however, is the rise of dnb in the former Soviet Bloc. Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Russia to name a few all have thriving scenes. Just youtube 'drum and bass step' and you'll find hundreds of videos of breakbeat mad kids stepping all over eastern europe. B-Complex, responsible for the smash Beautiful Lies is Slovakian, Bop and Electrosoul System from Russia. Hospital themselves have so much faith in the scene there that they distributed The Future Sound of Russia with a full NHS release, instead of marginalising it with a Med School release to which it's sound might actually suit more.

2010 Prediction: Anything could go, but I have my money on a ton of new producers bringing fresh ideas to the table.

Overall it's a pretty decent album, but not one you can listen to over and over, it's more the sort of thing that can be played in background.

Party people! The mother of diary dates is here, new years eve. Sure there's a ton of stuff happening in London; Ministry of Sound at the O2, Innovation at Fire, Get Loaded in the Dark at Brixton Academy to name a few. However, true mess head recommends this banger - two of London's trendiest promoters in force for a colossal shoreditch raveup. Funktion 1 sound throughout the Basement Club, and with 9 hours of solid noise, it's set to be huge.

Brodinski has had a massive year. Being asked to mix Bugged Out's latest Suck My Deck compilation, collabs with fellow Frenchman Noob, and the huge Eurostar with Mumdance have all helped establish him in the major league.

DJ Mehdi - Pocket Piano (Brodinski Remix) (320) - Brings the sublime piano loop to a driving techno powerhouse
Noob & Brodinski - Peanuts Club (Jake Simon Remix) (320) - Fidget squeaks and electro stabs. Huge.

Boy 8-Bit is firing now as well. Riding with the Mad Decent crew and reworking the likes of La Roux and Florence and the Machine have made him a name known. His Baltic Pine EP (buy it!) has smashed the beatport charts, and the track itself is sure to be dropped. This guy's style is undefinable!

Jack Beats ft. MC Dynamite - What (Boy 8-Bit Remix) (320) This is a true mess head favourite. That bouncing b-line....
Boy 8-Bit - A City Under Seige (320) - Underrated and epic.

Hannah Holland (apparently I was later told....) gave a massive set at Exit and is sure to repeat. Though not a prolific producer, she's been playing for over 8 years and regularly spins 5 hour sets.

V.V. Brown - Crying Blood (Hannah Holland Remix) (128) - Much blogged. When the bass gets its groove on you'll see why...

Mumdance is HUGE first off. Remixing Maximo Park in his emerging 'kerplunk' genre, his sound is wild. Fusing carnival sounds with bouncing drums and big bad bass, and running around dubstep, house and fidget without being tied down, expect anything. The Mad Decent Diplo-esque sound shines through tho.

The Whip - Divebomb (Mumdance Remix) (320) - takes the original glitches and whirrs to a kudoro festival. With whistles. And steel drums.

So ladies and gentlemen on Friday 27th November (today!) Krooked presents Hostage!!!! Bada man. He is going to ruin DQ so i recommend this!

This is how he describes his music:

If it was a recipe for a nice dancefloor-cake you'd do the following:
Ingredients:
500g of Electro and mixed with 250g of House music
125g of Techno
A dash of Old-Skool Hardcore
A tablespoon of Fidget (If you don't have any fidget a wee bit of Wonk will do)
A knob of Bassline
Blend them all together into a nice wobbly dough.
Bake at Gasmark 128bpm for 1 hour and 20 Minutes.
Sprinkle with UK Rave Stabs circa 1992

Mixmag Tour!

So the annual Mixmag tour rolls into town this Saturday at Plug. It has been ripping up various cities around the country and now steam rolls into Sheffield with a stellar line up. The Count (Herve) & Sinden will be bringing their eclectic mix of bass and electro as the bad boys of this night. In tow they have Radio 1 DJs Jaymo & Andy George and Alex Metric. Support as well comes from Plug's resident DJ's LJ Freeman and Geoff Ticehurst.

I wouldn't miss this one! This is a True Mess Head recommendation. Tickets are £7.00 advance. Get them from the Plug Box office or online at the Plug website. For the moment here's some tunes that will get rinsed on Saturday!

If you haven't heard this one yet, get on the download. Goulding is set to blow UP in the wake of La Roux / Little Boots type female electropop. You'll have heard her single Under The Sheets all over radio (he's also done this, check his myspace player) but this is the remix that's gonna put her on the map.

La Roux had Skream for In For The Kill. Goulding has JAKWOB.

DC Breaks mix

Was listenin to an oldish Drum and Bass Arena podcast mix at the gym the other day and oh my god! Was it good, got the blood pumping to all the right areas. Some amazing tunes in there mashed about my the DC Breaks guys.

Here it is. Unfortunately there isn't a tracklist for it :( but they do however play Capuiera by Infrared vs Gil Felix which can be found on the legendary Nightlife Volume 1

Its time that I clocked in and made my due contribution to True Mess Head. It's been a while so I'm here to ramble.

Sheffield has been hitting it hard this year in the music scene. Too many big names have graced the decks of various clubs around the city of Steel.

From now on my mission is to keep you updated on what is upcoming and fresh new beats from around the world.

So.. tonight!!!

Gracing the decks at Tuesday Club we have Foreign Beggars (United Colours of Beggatron Album Launch) & Alix Perez (1984 Album Launch). Enough has already been said about Perez so I'll stick it to the Beggars

Foreign Beggars are one of the best hip hop collectives that this country has to offer. Their live shows are always a talking point full of energy and heavy drops. Foreign Beggars are a 5 man crew comprising of rappers Orifice Vulgatron and Metropolis, DJ NoNames, Beat Bozer Shlomo and Producer Dag Nabbit. In their latest offering they have collaborated with a variety of artists most notably Noisia. He has produced a vast quantity of 'United Colours of Beggatron'.

Jam The Channel Halloween RAVE

What a weekend. Friday for some RUDE drum and bass courtesy of original sin, sub focus and serial killaz. Crissy Criss whacked the dubstep too. Heard him drop Seeerious by Noah D at the bar, nice. Buuuut we've already done our homework for that.

Saturday was part 2 at the Phoenix, Jam the Channel style. Not as rammed as friday, but lush decorations and video screens hanging from the ceiling made it different in a wicked way. And the djs were on FORM!

Lee Mortimer. The only bad thing I can think to say about him is he didn't get a chance to play his Indo remix and thats me clutching at straws to complain. He's a legend. MASSIVE set, wish I could remember more of the tracklist. Top guy aswell, was loving the mask.

Quality drop from him: Foamo - Rockerman (Lee Mortimer Remix)

Calvertron. I have no idea where this guy gets his tracks from but they were outrageous. All top quality electroeyfidgety goodness.

Yo. Now everyone writing this blog has net we're gonna get the posts a flowing. Keep your eyes out...

For some reason or another I think liquid is possibly the greatest thing to happen to drum and bass. Don't get me wrong, there's always a time for filth laced skank bangers, but being a musical kinda guy Im really feeling musical vibes in DnB. Wicked energised tempo but with big low basslines and lush chord sequences. Genius.

So, here's some of the smoothest liquid vibes floating around my library. Get rollin for these...

Bachelors of Science

- wicked tunes from stateside. The whole album Science Fiction is massive, grab it here

Lenzman

Alix Perez

- I don't know how I can start with this guy. Favourite producer, nu-skool dnb pioneer Perez from North London just released his debut album on Shogun. Getting playlisted even on daytime radio 1 shows just how big his tunes are getting!

I'm AK. I'm the guy who on this blog is representing the Sheffield scene. Give me a good beat and a good hook and you got me dancing . I don't have a narrow view of music so like to embrace it all.

I'm gonna be bringing to you the best nights in Sheffield with the best DJs and we do get them.

There's so much to talk about so I'll shorten it down and give a quick lowdown.

DQ - This is the heart of the underground music scene in Sheffield. Every night there's something happening here. It's regularly packed and for once the drinks aren't ridiculously priced. If your into your beats then they get a whole host of djs coming through here every 1month. Sinden, Drop the Lime, Tomb Crew, Mustard Pimps, Boy 8 Bit & Duke Dumont to name a few, http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2252286976&ref=ts - That's the Facebook group for DQ. I'll post more on the individual nights, closer to the date.

Plug - Plug nightclub is the home to Shuffle, Detonate, Fresh till Deaf and more. It is the BIG nightclub in Sheffield. With a capacity over 2000 you can see why it attracts names such as Deadmau5, Kissy Sell Out, James Zabiela, Dubfire and many more. Shuffle on a Saturday is renowned for its stella big name pulling power. Detonate is a monthly night that showcases the best D&B this country has to offer. Danny Byrd ripped the place apart the last time I went down. My favourite is Fresh Till Deaf. A new addition to Plug's line up brings in the underground electro and fidget djs that I crave. Foamo, Hijack & Stupid Fresh. It also helps to know that Plug has a new banging soundsystem installed over summer. Hello!

TTC - The Tuesday Club is the best midweek D&B night in the country. That is definitely a good start. It simply is definitely the heart of D&B, Dubstep & Hip-hop in Sheffield. They book everyone and anyone. The list is too long to mention here but its good, real good. They also manage to chuck in a couple of Valve Soundsystem's every year, which rock the Octagon centre to its core. I would highly recommend checking this out. Cheap entry and cheap drinks, with wicked dj's. Not more you can really ask for.

Right, Original Sin...Basically, I love this dudes music. His sounds are some of the best I've heard and he is definately an influence to me and the music I aspire to produce, I just love the dark synth waves he uses in most of his songs.

Check out his myspace, there's not much goin on on there but i guess it's all good, free legal streaming of a few of his songs.

He's got an album coming out on the 7th Dec 2009 named 'Grow Your Wings' which features the songs ‘Therapy’, ‘Pimp Don’t Limp’ and ‘Without You’. I think it might be the biggest Drum 'n' Bass album of the year, close to Sick! Music by Hospitality, or Sub-Focus's self titled album.

Smoke and Fidget - Wearhouse Music Takeover @ Egg, London

so last night was the first of egg's label showcases, and the guys in question were Wearhouse Music. Lee Mortimer's jackin house imprint is putting out some bombs at the moment and they showed it last night. Mortimer was backed up by Chew The Fat! resident Foamo and fidget star Hijack, all playing rinsing sets.

Definite highlight of the night was bournemouth boy Hijack. He managed to pack out the floor in about 10 minutes of getting his hands on the decks and went on to rip through his huge re-edit catalogue and remixes.
